I agree that photography should be exhibited and at the least, printed. I say this because I am in the business of printing photographs, I am also concerned that the American tradition of keeping a family history through photographs is being endangered by the improper handling of ephemeral digital images....but that is a different topic.
With regard to contest rules, I also agree with the author that photographers should not give away marketable images to trawler type contests. Like many other pursuits, photographers are subject to scams. Traditionally, publishers would sponsor contests, congratulate the winners (all who entered) and then publish a book for them to buy for $69.99. History has proven the "vanity press" to be an effective marketing medium. With the internet, the scams have only been multiplied.
Contests should provide photographers with a reason to practice their art form. A contest is a motivating phenomenon that sets a goal for photographers to accomplish, and sometimes photographers need a goal to jump start the creative process.
If a photographer does not agree with the stated rules or senses that something is wrong, then he or she should simply not enter the contest. In most cases, especially with local contests, any perceived infringement on a photographer's rights is usually not intentional.

Don't be too hard on yourself! The information you provide us on a daily basis far out-weighs any feelings of anger or disappointment you are experiencing right now. You've just validated your original rule to "always do your comparison shopping and research first". I learned a lot from this article, as well as all of your previous articles and am now ready to purchase MY GPS! Thanks, Joe. Keep giving us your excellent works...

C'mon Joe... We know you will file it away for another day. I would love to be there the next time you go! I am sure you will be prepared to deal with them in your own special way :) ...maybe I should come, eh?

Check out the Squeezebox Boom. My review: http://jasoncrowther.com/2009/02/16/the-squeezebox-boom/

Bottom line: Kinda the same idea, but very net radio friendly, and no service charge. Love it.

they are terrible there. I can't hold that type of stuff in. I usually start my attack with, "I'm sorry. Did i do something wrong?? You seem mad at me..." And then it goes from there.

Nice writing though. :)
